San Francisco. The beautiful Eurasian paintress Emu O'Hara (Julie Condra), who is originally from Canada, was on vacation in the US. She witnesses a homicide: an elegant handsome man with lissom movements, perfectly controlling his body, shoots the Yakuza Takeshi "Sonny" Shimazaki (Kevan Ohtsji) and his bodyguard. Thereafter, when he is looking at his victim a teardrop is running down his cheek. He introduces himself to Emu, telling her his name, Yo (Mark Dacascos), then he disappears…

Now Shudo Shimazaki (Mako), Takeshis father and one of the most mightful oyabun (Yakuza-boss) of Japan comes to Vancouver to avenge the murder of his son Takeshi. He knows the culprit: it is the "Freeman" the best killer of a legendary but very real Chinese underground organisation: the 108 Dragons.
He knows that the Freeman must kill Emu, and he likes the police to use her as a lure for a trap…..

During the filming Mark met Julie Condra (Emu), they got married 3 years later!

The director Christophe Gans had a sensational box office success in his native country France where the movie was at the top of the charts for weeks.

The idea for the starting sequence, the alive-dragontattoo which is wriggling around the freeman's body, was developed by the photographer and videoclip designer Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who at the end couldn't realise his own project because of his time schedule.

With his recommendation Gans placed this order to the group SPARX, which won different awards like the Prix Pixel-INA of the Imagina '96 for this fantastic work.
